Swamp Foxes show marked improvement
The Foxes only won two games last year and both were against the same team. This season, Ashley Ridge finished at 12-12 and went 6-4 in region play to place third in its region.

“For a second year program it is truly remarkable what we accomplished this year,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “We won six times as many games against eight different opponents. We finished the regular season with a winning record after defeating two AAAA opponents and a current Elite 8 team on the road. Of our 11 regular season losses, eight were by single digits.”

Welch attributes much of the team’s success to the determination and commitment of his players.
“We told our kids from day one that success is about investment and not entitlement and we all have to invest the time, energy and effort into success,” he said. “To our kids’ credit, they bought in from day one and continue a relentless pursuit to be the best that they can be. Just as they were leading us into this year, our spring, summer and fall are going to be absolutely vital towards our success next year. We remain a young program and have a very long way to go but, when strong purpose teams up with great passion there's no telling how far a group can go.”

Plus, Welch says the student body is behind his team.“Our following continues to grow at rapid speeds,” he explained. “Our Ridge Rowdies student section has become a force to be reckoned with. We have reset and broke attendance records on multiple occasions. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the program, which is what high school basketball is all about. When a community rallies around and identifies themselves with a program it is a special thing.”

Swamp Foxes dash by Garrett Tech
By Roger Lee
Summerville Journal Scene ®
The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team had a convincing win over Garrett Tech Tuesday night.
The Swamp Foxes earned a 55-39 victory to improve their record to 8-9 with a 3-2 standing in Region 6-AA. It was the team’s third consecutive victory in region play.
While the game began with a fast pace, both teams only managed 6 points in the opening period. Shots began to fall in the second as the Foxes outscored Tech 18-10 for a 24-16 lead at the half.
The Foxes rode the momentum built up by a late push in the second into the third and rolled to victory.
Khalil Davis led all scorers with 13 points. Romelo Doctor finished with 12 while Chris Redd provided 8, Tre Deloach and Fred Weeks 7 each, Andrew Kolgaklis 6 and Charles Hanckel 2. Rashidus Goode led Tech with 11 points and Ankham Small chipped in 10.
Ashley Ridge has a chance to avenge one of its region losses when it travels to Woodland Jan. 29. Earlier this season, the Wolverines edged out the Foxes by a mere 2 points at The Swamp.
Next week, the Foxes host rematches with region leader Burke and Cane Bay.

Swamp Foxes pounce on Cobras
The Ashley Ridge boys picked up their first region win of the season Tuesday.
After taking a 7-point lead in the first period, the Swamp Foxes had two solid periods to lift them to a 58-48 win at Cane Bay. Ashley Ridge improved to 6-8, with a 1-2 standing in Region 6-AA. Cane Bay, the area’s other second-year team, dropped to 3-13, 0-3.
“So much of last year was just learning the game,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “Now we are able to focus on how to get things done and how to come out of tough situations. We gutted out a region win on the road and its important for a young team to learn how to do that. Anytime we come over here, it’s going to be tough. It’s a rivalry game between two young schools so everyone is excited.”
After winning five out of 11 games prior to region play, the Foxes dropped a pair of games last week to Woodland and Burke. However, the loss to Woodland was only by a 2-point margin and Burke, the No. 2 ranked AA team in the state, is the only team to have defeated the Foxes by a margin higher than 10 points.
The victory over the Cobras gives the Foxes reason to celebrate, but Welch says the most challenging part of the season is still ahead.
“This was a big one tonight, but we can’t play as sloppy as we did the second half and expect to get it done,” he said. “Our region is tough. You can’t count any team out because there are too many great coaches and great athletes.”
Ashley Ridge did a good job moving the ball around on offense to get open jump shots and shots inside to take a 29-19 lead into the half. Aggressive defense and patient offense continued to pay off early in the third period as the Foxes outscored the Cobras 15-8 in the period.
However, the Cobra press started to hinder the Foxes in the final period and Ashley Ridge found itself in a fight to hold on to the lead. Xavier Moultrie and Jiquan Hammond hit several baskets in the period as the Cobras closed to within 6 points. In the final two minutes, Ashley Ridge made some buckets to again pull away.
The Foxes had three players post double-digit scoring. Khalil Davis finished with 21 points. Fred Weeks added 13 for Ashley Ridge and Romelo Doctor 11.
Hammond led all scorers with 22 points. Moultrie added 15 for the Cobras.

Swamp Foxes score school record 93 points to defeat Military Magnet!!
The Ashley Ridge boys won a shootout with Military Magnet last week.
The Swamp Foxes entered the game Jan. 8 as the underdog, having already lost to the 11-3 Military Magnet team twice this season. But Ashley Ridge had four players post double-digit scoring as it earned a 93-83 victory.
“We had a total team effort from our kids,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “Going in I knew it would be a war, but 93-83 I did not expect. There were 56 fouls called in the game so free throws had a lot to do with the high score.”
The 93 points is an all-time high for the Foxes. The most the team had score in a game prior to last week was 62 points.
The Foxes jumped ahead of Military Magnet 44-22 in the first half. They held a 21-point lead entering the final period, but Magnet made up some ground in the final period.
“It got a little wild at the end,” Welch said. “They had their backs up against the wall and played like it. The shots started falling from the sky and we put them on the line quite a bit. However, our kids weathered the storm. It was a huge win for our young program. I think it says a lot about our kids and how resilient they are.”
Romelo Doctor led the charge, scoring 20 points for Ashley Ridge. Khalil Davis added 18, Tre Deloach 17 and Chris Redd 12. Andrew Kolgaklis and Fred Weeks both scored six for the Foxes.
Magnet was led by Julius Cleveland, who posted a game-high 33 points. Deantre Johnson added 30 for Magnet.
On Tuesday, the Foxes opened Region 6-AA play with a 60-62 loss to Woodland. Davis led the Ashley Ridge shooters with 15 points. Doctor added 12 and Deloach 10. With the loss, the team fell to 5-7 on the season.
Woodland was led by Otez Ross, who scored 19 points.

Swamp Foxes compete in Cougar Classic
By Roger Lee
Summerville Journal Scene

The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team placed fourth at the Colleton County Cougar Classic holiday tournament last week.

The Swamp Foxes opened the tournament with a 54-52 win over Boiling Springs. Four members of the team scored in double digits during the game. Tre Deloach led the way with 14 points. Andrew Kolgaklis finished with 12 while Fred Weeks contributed 11 and Khalil Davis 10. Romelo Doctor had 7.

Boiling Springs was led by Jordan Wallace with 15 and Caleb Cabiness with 12.

In the third-place game Dec. 30, Ashley Ridge fell 39-42 to Edisto. Davis, who was named to the all-tournament team, led all shooters with 13 points. Kolgaklis finished with six and Deloach and Weeks contributed five each.

Ashley Ridge returns to the hard wood Jan. 8 when it travels to Military Magnet. The Foxes open region play Jan. 12 when they host Woodland. The girls are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tip off.

Swamp Foxes Have a Big Week!!
The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team evened its record with a pair of wins last week.

The Swamp Foxes earned a victory over Stall Thursday, fell to Military Magnet Saturday and then bounced back with a win over St. John’s Saturday. The team showed its versatility, popping outside shots while also utilizing its big guys in the paint as it improved to 3-3 on the year.

That marks a vast improvement from a year ago, when the team was in its first season with only underclassmen.
“From two wins in a season to two wins in a week – I think it shows some growth,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “To think this time last year we were sitting at 0-6 and very far away from our first win. I am just so proud of our kids. Bottom line is we are still a very young and inexperienced program with three freshmen and two sophomores in our rotation. With a young program it is so important to grow and fight together as much as possible and our kids are getting battle tested.”

The Foxes did a good job on the boards Thursday as they earned a 51-34 victory over Stall. Junior Tre Deloach had 14 rebounds and five points while fellow post player Andrew Kolgaklis added five rebounds and 10 points. Freshman guard Khalil Davis contributed 17 points and eight rebounds.

Season Starts with a HUGE ROAD WIN @ Stall!!
The Ashley Ridge boys earned a 60-42 win over Stall in the season opener for both teams. Point guard Khalil Davis led the Swamp Fox shooters, scoring 15 points. Romelo Doctor added 10 while Lorenzo Baker and Fred Weeks added 8 each. David Bright led Stall with 12 points.

Baker and Trey Deloach had eight rebounds each for the Swamp Foxes and Andrew Kolgaklis had seven.

“We played well defensively and took some big charges,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “The biggest difference was our defensive intensity and the fact we did a decent job of keeping them off of the offensive glass. I am very proud of our kids and their commitment to the defensive end of the floor. We are still struggling to finish offensively. That is something we must improve as we head into the rest of our schedule.”

Swamp Foxes excited about second season
“You can expect a relentless effort from this team,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “When we get knocked down, we don’t stay down.  Our kids are committed to this program and to being students of the game. We have a way to go, but the tenacity of the kids is just unbelievable.”

The Foxes have a tough schedule ahead of them that includes games against strong AA teams and AAAA teams. Their region includes Burke, which entered the season ranked fourth in the state AA coaches association poll, and several other schools known for having talented athletes

However, Welch is optimistic.
“I’m excited about the season because we have a lot of opportunities to do some great things,” he said. “Our kids have a team mentality. They don’t care if they take the shot or set the screen as long as the job gets done. Our students also support our program. I think The Swamp is probably the toughest place to play in our region due to our student section, the Ridge Rowdies.”

Swamp Fox Men's Basketball in the Summerville Journal Scene!
“ The people and great basketball minds I’ve been around like Ralph Nunn and Gregg Nibert have really driven the kind of coach I am,” he said. “They have really helped define my philosophy. I’m a very defensive oriented guy and I think intensity is a good word to use to describe my coaching style. It’s hard for me to ask a kid to be intense out on the floor if I’m sitting down. Offensively, I want the players to learn the game of basketball. I don’t want them to be robots just running our sets but the main focus of this program will always be to produce young men that are able to leave this program better prepared to compete in the real world. To compete honestly, fairly and responsibly.”
